In this masterclass you will explore the benefits of engaging the public in participatory research, when it is appropriate to take this approach in your research and the key considerations to ensure responsible research and innovation. You will explore power dynamics and how to build trust, through participating in group activities and reviewing case studies.

This session is relevant to anyone considering a participatory approach during part or throughout the research cycle and regardless of research area or discipline.

We strongly recommend you complete our Core Engagement masterclass before attending our Participatory Research masterclass. Please sign up here for the Core Engagement masterclass.

Key Areas covered

  • Discussion of the breadth of participatory research approaches
  • Exploring opportunities in the research cycle where a participatory research approach can be adopted and the advantages of doing so (for the participants, the research and the researchers)
  • Preparation and considerations required when developing a participatory research approach, especially focusing on the ethics of participatory research (including power dynamics, ownership, remuneration).
  • Facilitation techniques which can be used to engage with audiences and stakeholders
