I was at a point of transition in my personal and professional development and decided it would be beneficial to undertake a training programme for senior leaders that would help me identify areas for further development, enhance my ability to make a real impact in my new role and provide professional recognition as an outcome. The Imperial College and Corndel Executive Development Programme (Level 7) appeared to offer what I was looking for and I am very pleased to say that I was not disappointed.
The main attraction for me was that a large element of the programme involved daily implementation and practice of the lessons learnt, rather than just completing course work. The apprenticeship provided ongoing opportunities for me to reflect on and acknowledge how I continually demonstrate my competence in several key areas in my role, including developing a diverse, inclusive, resilient, and valued workforce and implementing a high-performance strategy that focuses on growth and improving efficiency.
It was an extremely busy year for our team and the main challenge for me was ensuring that I committed the time to complete the modules. I have recommended the apprenticeship to several colleagues, and I would advise anyone undertaking this programme to ensure that they prioritise time for completing the modules as this is valuable reflection time and directly supports your day-to-day responsibilities.
One of the most rewarding parts of the apprenticeship experience was seeing how changes I have made to my management style, as a result of the programme, have directly impacted the level of performance and personal/professional development of members of my team. Also, the broad range of topics covered and the one-to-one coaching sessions with Jaclyn (which were invaluable) enabled me to identify and articulate skills, expertise, and experience that I had not necessarily realised I had, and I am now very confident about the senior leader that I am.
