Are you drawn to fast-paced innovation? Do you want to experience the thrill of bringing new technologies to life? If so, a career in tech could be the perfect fit for you. With abundant opportunities, this dynamic, constantly changing industry impacts every business in some way. At Imperial College Business School, we’ll help you develop the skills needed to thrive in the rapidly changing tech landscape, whether you want to join a tech-specific company or explore roles within non-tech organisations.

Sector trends 2024

It’s no surprise that tech is a fast-evolving industry – perhaps that’s what draws you to it. Recently we’ve seen significant growth in areas like big data analytics, cloud computing and mobile technology. As companies invest more in digital transformation and remote working, this trend is set to continue.

The tech job market is always shifting, with new positions constantly emerging. Companies are increasingly focusing on upskilling and reskilling, valuing transferable skills and soft skills like stakeholder management, adaptability, customer centricity, being data driven and having a product-oriented mindset.

Tech sectors with the most opportunities:

  • Consumer tech

  • B2B SaaS

  • Cloud + Tech infrastructure

  • Fintech

  • AI/ML

  • E-commerce

We’re also seeing a shift towards employee development, with tech companies prioritising growth opportunities and an employee-centric approach over just job security and compensation.

At Imperial, we provide the tools and support you need to thrive in this field. Whether you’re aiming for tech giants or exploring niche disciplines, we’re here to help you develop and implement your career strategy.

Do you need technical skills?

Tech is increasingly integrated across all industries, so continuously upskilling and reskilling will position you for a successful career. While technical skills are important, employers also highly value transferable soft skills like flexibility, communication and teamwork.

Even if you lack traditional technical skills or coding experience, being familiar with relevant software and tools can make a difference. Strong communication skills are crucial for translating technical information to non-technical stakeholders. Adopting a proactive and adaptable approach to your career development will help you succeed in tech.

Preparing for a career in tech

Our students and Career Consultants at Imperial get to experience first hand how every company is undergoing transformation and becoming, to a certain degree, a tech company. Therefore, tech will continue to grow in relevance for each and every sector.

A career in tech is exciting, varied and will put your versatility to the test. To prepare for your next step after Imperial, start by immersing yourself in the tech world. Attend networking and industry events to build valuable professional connections.

Get involved with clubs and societies at Imperial, particularly the Tech Club. Taking on a leadership role in it can demonstrate your commitment and interest in tech and be a great way to build your personal brand.

Familiarise yourself with job descriptions. Thoroughly research what companies are looking for, and their ethos, to understand the specific skills and requirements for different tech roles. Each company may value different things, so always tailor your applications, CV and cover letters.

Tech interviews

Tech interviews often involve psychometric tests, business case studies and other assessments, so it’s a good idea to practise these skills via tools on The Hub before you begin your job search. We’ve seen students achieve great success by making speculative applications to companies and fields they’re passionate about, rather than just applying to advertised roles.

We encourage you to leverage alumni connections and industry contacts, prepare thoroughly for your interviews, and stay updated on the latest trends and news to navigate the competitive job market, both in London and beyond.
