Digital Finance – Opportunities and Challenges.

The event is organised by the Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis and the new Centre for Global Finance and Technology at Imperial College Business School.

This event will focus on the opportunities and challenges from digital finance. The use of mobile phones – linked or not linked to bank accounts – as devices for payments and other financial services – has dramatically expanded over the past years.  The novel aspect is that a developing country – Kenya – has been at the forefront, with the introduction of M-Pesa in 2007. This event will be opened with a keynote speech by the former governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Prof. Ndung’u, who was the regulator overseeing the introduction of M-Pesa.  It will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on both business perspectives (including from Fintech companies), policy issues and regulatory challenges and considering the importance of digital finance both for developing countries (where financial inclusion challenges loom large) and developed countries (where the competition and innovation angles are stronger),.

Moderator: Franklin Allen (Imperial College Business School)

Panel participants are:

  • Thorsten Beck (Cass Business School)
  • Matthew Gardiner (Cass Business School)
  • Andrei Kirilenko (Imperial College Business School)
  • Tommaso Valleti (Imperial College Business School)

The event is in  the Lower Ground Lecture Theatre at the Business school.

Agenda:
18:00-19:30 – Keynote speech by Professor Ndung’u, followed by Panel discussion.
19:30-20:00 – Drinks Reception.
