Blue whale and her calf swim through the open blue ocean, near the surface of the water

The Centre for Climate Finance & Investment is excited to announce the launch of its global survey on Nature Investing, designed to gather insights into equity investors’ perspectives on nature and biodiversity risks and opportunities.

The survey, led by Dr Iva Koci and Dr Pernille Holtedahl and supported by the CCFI, has been distributed to institutional investors globally.

Your views are important to us and will provide invaluable firsthand evidence on the global state of nature finance. If you’d like to participate but haven’t received an invitation, please click here or contact the research leads at natureinvestment.survey@imperial.ac.uk.

Project Summary

Nature is the “new climate”, and investors and regulatory authorities are pushing for biodiversity to become part of risk and opportunity considerations of capital markets.

Yet the ‘how’ of nature investing is still largely shrouded in mystery: investment tools and best practices are still to be developed, and unattractive financial returns coupled with uncertain biodiversity impact have historically restricted private financing.

There is little research to date linking biodiversity to finance. This project seeks to contribute to filling that gap by conducting a global survey of listed equity investors (4,400 on the target list). Our study aims to document how the geographical dispersion and belief of biodiversity risk affect the motivation and investment styles of investors. The survey seeks to understand, on the one hand, investors’ motivations for integrating (or not) nature considerations into their strategies, and on the other asks investors about their perceptions of risks and asset pricing and if these vary by sector.

In a second step, we will seek to link survey responses to institutions’ characteristics to evidence cross-sectional differences in their implementation (holdings analysis) at an aggregate and sectoral level. Lastly, we aim to document the interconnection to climate by examining the relation between biodiversity and climate portfolio-level scores.

The findings of the research will be documented in an academic (peer reviewed) article as well as in a report designed for an industry audience.
