CHEPI partners with India’s Institute of Economic Growth and US Foundation Resolve to Save Lives to explore the potential of fiscal policies for healthy nutrition

June 16 2023, Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Delhi

CHEPI has co-organised a stakeholder consultation event on food taxes for health in the context of a collaborative project with IEG, supported by Resolve to Save Lives. This Consultation sought to bring together various stakeholders to advise and inform the study design and engage in a discourse on promoting healthier diets in India through taxation of foods high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS). The stakeholders included policymakers from various sectors, civil society organisations, as well as relevant industry and research organisations. The findings of this work will inform policymaking on the potential added benefits, both long- and short-term, of using differentiated GST rates on foods based on their nutritional quality, as well as some of the key factors that may determine the effectiveness of a tax in promoting healthier diets.
