At the time of the workshop in April 2024, Covid-19 was estimated to have cost the world $11trillion. Whilst global pandemics are rare, there is a need to invest in prevention and preparation for the next one.

This workshop was organised jointly by the Jameel Institute, Institute of Infection, and the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Innovation at Imperial College London. It brought together a variety of international experts in economics, public health, and infectious disease to consider the best investments that could be made in terms of lives saved as well as economic and societal outcomes.

The discussions focused on the three areas of vaccinations, surveillance and data infrastructure, and government policy at national and international levels. The workshop recognised the need for national infrastructure and capacity to be in place to support technology transfer, especially relating to vaccines, and that much depends on the ability to help politicians to make the right decisions for their populations.

The workshop highlighted the importance of transdisciplinary collaboration to improve pandemic resilience and to support the sharing of data, intelligence and policy.
