“I advise people considering applying for this programme to be bold and brave. It is definitely challenging, but very exciting and fulfilling, as there is so much knowledge gained in a short amount of time. Limits will be tested, but the people involved are also amazing. One year will fly by so quickly, so I also advise people to appreciate every moment.”

What experience did you have prior to studying MSc Business Analytics?

I graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from the University of the Philippines in June 2019. Immediately after, I joined the Philippine Karate National team to compete in the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in December 2019, following a four-year hiatus from karate to pursue graduating with the highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. Since then, I have competed in several competitions, such as the only Olympic qualifying competition in Paris for Tokyo 2020, the World Championships, the Asian Championships, and the SEA Games. I continue to play for the Philippine team while studying at Imperial College Business School. In May, I won one of only two gold medals for Philippine Karate in the SEA Games held in Cambodia, and a silver medal for the team event.

Why did you choose to study MSc Business Analytics at Imperial College Business School?

I looked at the MSc Business Analytics curriculum online and found that it was the perfect mix of data science theory and business application that I hoped to apply in the future for my career. Data science and business analytics are interesting fields to me, and I was excited to learn a lot while exploring London and meeting people from all around the world.

What are you enjoying learning about the most?

I am enjoying how hands-on the programme is. In a very short amount of time, we were able to apply the skills we learned in our core modules to the projects within our elective classes, such as forecasting electricity demand, predicting the demand for a certain ingredient in a restaurant, or making strategic decisions for businesses using data.

How are you planning to use your Master’s for your future career?

I do not have specific plans for my future career as I simply like to see where life takes me. However, what is definite is that I will return to the Philippines to make a difference in any sector. There is a general lack of data management in the country, and with my Master’s in Business Analytics, I hope to effect change and make more informed decisions, either in government policy or for private firms.

How has the career support at the Business School helped you achieve your goals?

The career support is great, especially in providing guidance on what companies look for and how to present myself in resumes and interviews. However, for the moment, I have not been looking for a new role as I still wish to pursue my athletic career. In sports, age does matter, and I want to take this opportunity while I'm still able, as opposed to my career, which can wait for a while.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for MSc Business Analytics?

I advise people considering applying for this programme to be bold and brave. It is definitely challenging, but very exciting and fulfilling, as a lot of knowledge is gained in a short amount of time. Limits will be tested, but the people involved are also amazing. One year will fly by so quickly, so I also advise people to appreciate every moment.
