Sofia Hueffer profile
Sofia Hueffer, BSc Economics, Finance & Data Science
“It was the balance between economics, finance and data science that this course achieves that particularly drew me to Imperial. I wanted to learn more about the intersection between the subjects and how skills and information learned in one subject can be applied in the other industries.”

What was your background prior to studying the BSc Economics, Finance & Data Science?

I have a varied background in multiple subjects, mostly taking STEM A-levels like further maths and physics and have experience from a summer internship working in banking for 6 weeks. I also have some experience in computer science and have done an EPQ on cyber security in the financial industry, from here I became a finalist for the national cyber security for student of the year in 2022.

While my background is quite diverse I find that every experience has assisted me with all aspects of the BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science far. Some of my academic interests include participating in competitions and attempting to apply what I have learnt so far in real-life scenarios through data modelling and analysing global phenomena.

What motivated you to apply for this course at Imperial?

It was the balance between economics, finance and data science that this course achieves that particularly drew me to Imperial. I wanted to learn more about the intersection between the subjects and how skills and information learned in one subject can be applied in the other’s industry. Additionally, the academic environment within Imperial seemed like a good fit for me and my own goals.

How does it feel to be part of the first class to undertake this new course?

While different, being the first class to undertake this course is extremely exciting and full of potential. It allows me the unique opportunity to be at the forefront of this new combined field and help shape how the degree may go in future years. I also know that all my peers in this class are in the same boat, so we are able to learn and navigate this course together.

Is there something specific you hope to achieve or learn in this course?

I am most hoping for the ability to enhance my analytical skills and data modelling knowledge, specifically how to combine it and apply it in financial analysis so that I can tackle real-world challenges and adapt to the changing financial industry.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your academic life, have you joined any clubs and societies?

I am involved in multiple societies, but my favourite is investment society which allows me to practice what I have learned during my lectures and apply it in practice and real-world scenarios that push my boundaries and allow me to grow in my role as junior analyst within the society.

What are you looking forward to learning about the most?

I am particularly interested in the data analysis aspect of the course, and how data driven decisions help shape both the economic and financial decisions. I look forward to learning new techniques for data analysis, modelling and visualisation as well as advancing my coding skills and potentially learning about machine learning later in the course.

What is it like studying and being in London?

Being in London is a brilliant advantage for me as I have access to many different opportunities, and it is an incredibly diverse and welcoming city. To me it feels like the entirety of London is my campus allowing me to have new experiences and learn more things that I believe helps with both my academic and personal growth.
