Materials as a Service

Abstract
As we grow accustomed to accessing goods such as cars as services instead of owning them, could we extend this concept to the materials and components used by manufacturers? Perhaps, instead of buying the steel to make the car, the manufacturer would only pay to use the steel for as long as the car was on the road. The same might be true of the rubber in the tyres and the fabric on the seats. This radical business model calls into question the very idea of ownership by actors in a value chain offering a new way to organise our economy and achieve the transition to a sustainable society.
