Developing an open-source 5-axis 3D printing platform

Abstract
The common layer-by-layer deposition of regular 3-axis material extrusion 3D printing can result in objects with anisotropic mechanical properties, visible surface defects and often requires excessive build support material. To overcome these, researchers have employed robotic arms and multi-axis CNCs to deposit materials in conformal layers. Such multi-axis 3D printing is inaccessible to many individuals due to high costs, technical complexities, and limited software support for conformal slicers. This project will make multi-axis 3D printing accessible to all by providing an open-source platform for designing, simulating and creating conformally-printed 3D objects.
