Implementing Sustainability in Healthcare Systems

Abstract
Climate change is the greatest threat to human health, with expectations of 250,000 additional deaths and USD 2-4 billion in direct health damage costs by 2030 globally. Yet, the healthcare sector itself is a major emitter of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 5% of the global emissions. Several clinical, psychological, and organisational barriers exist to reducing waste and emissions in clinical settings such as hospital wards and operating rooms. Working in proximity with healthcare professionals, an interdisciplinary research team funded by the Medical Research Council and other healthcare stakeholders, this PhD studentship will explore pathways to decarbonise healthcare.
