Course overview
The Department of Brain Sciences provides an ideal environment to pursue a PhD and build your career in research. We have a unique, internationally-recognised portfolio of translational research in neuroscience and mental health.
As a postgraduate research student, you'll have access to state-of-the-art facilities and work alongside our world-leading academic staff in a dynamic and supportive research environment. Structure
Milestones for the first year of study include:
Within 2 months of starting:
Submit a short research plan, summarising the problem they have been set, and their proposed plan to work on it.
Within 12 months of starting (24 months for part-time):
Submit a report (Early Stage Assessment) summarising the first year’s work, including courses taken. There is a short oral examination to assess this.

How to apply
- Identify and seek the agreement of a supervisor.
- Make an online application and upload your supporting documentation.
- Send confirmation of your online application to the Research Degrees Administrator via email to researchdegreeenquiries@imperial.ac.uk.
- Admissions and Departmental reviews of your application take place (all successful PhD/ MD(Res) applicants require an interview as part of the application process). You will be contacted following the outcome of your application reviews.

Fees and funding
Funding is often secured through Wellcome Trust or MRC DTP Fellowships. We have some departmental studentships available.
We also have a range of grants and scholarships which you don't need to pay back.

Career
Graduates of the PhD programme go on to a wide variety of careers destinations.
A PhD provides academic training and also experience of a wide range of transferable skills that equip graduates with the skills necessary to embark on a range of careers. Some students continue into post-doctoral positions and ultimately academic careers, whilst many find their futures in non-academic environments.
