AB  - A gate drive circuit for GTO thyristor with over current protection was designed and tested. The paper gives a full description and operation for the circuit. Over current protection circuit could be set to allow maximum current flow through the GTO, this value is related to the rating of the device itself. This paper also will improve the understanding of the switching behavior of a GTO thyristor. The Marconi GT224K GTO, was chosen for the test circuit.
