    Comparison of Three Electromechanical Oscillation Damping Estimation Methods

    This paper describes three data driven methods to monitor electromechanical oscillations in interconnected power system operation. The objective is to compare and contrast the performance of the methods. The accuracy of damping ratio and frequency of oscillations are the measures of the performance of the algorithms. The advantages and disadvantages of various techniques and their limitations to measurement noise have been considered while assessing performance. The target frequency and damping are computed using the Nordic power system simulation model.

    A single eco-friendly ultra-low-loss magnetic ballast design for a wide range of T5 high-efficient fluorescent lamps

    A patent-pending single design of an ultra-low-loss (ULL) magnetic ballast for a T5 high-efficient (T5-HE) fluorescent lamps rated from 14W to 35W is presented. Based on the use of a non-linear physical low-pressure discharge lamp model, it is discovered that the same set of ballast parameters can be chosen for operating T5-HE 14, 21, 28 and 35W lamps at their respective rated power at a mains voltage of 220V-240V. With energy efficiency higher than and lifetime much longer than their electronic counterparts and being recyclable, the ULL ballasts offer a more environmentally-friendly solution to T5-HE lamps than electronic ballasts. This single ballast design offers great convenience to both ballast manufacturers and users because only one product design can cover a range of the most popular T5-HE lamps. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the proposal. © 2010 IEEE.

    Future transmission network operation and design standards to support a low carbon electricity system

    Increased connections of wind power in the Great Britain (GB) transmission system had triggered the need to review the fundamental principles behind the deterministic Great Britain Supply Quality and Security Standards (SQSS) that has been used for more than 5 decades. This review analyses the necessary upgrades to improve the efficiency of transmission system operation and capacity required to accommodate the present and future generation system. This paper in particular addresses a number of issues raised from the applications of deterministic SQSS and its operation and design efficiency concerning the best usage of N-k policy type. With respect to the United Kingdom (UK) transmission system operation, deterministic standards have been used to determine secure maximum levels of power transfers across a particular boundary. Our studies indicate that the deterministic standards are too conservative. This leads to over requirement of transmission capacity in planning timescales or significant constraints to access remote wind power in operational timescales. As an alternative, the use of an integrated reliability and cost-benefit framework to optimize the level of transmission system security has been developed. A wide range of studies have been carried out to analyze the benefits of this approach in the UK. The results indicate the need to move towards this integrated approach in order to maximize the value of transmission and to speed up the connections of wind power. ©2010 IEEE.

    A dimmable Light-emitting diode (LED) driver with cascaded mag-amp postregulators for multistring applications

    A dimmable LED driver with cascaded magnetic amplifiers is proposed for multistring applications. A master power converter is used to provide the major part of the voltage for a plurality of slave converter modules with magnetic amplifier control. The magnetic amplifiers are used to regulate only the varying part of the LED string voltage and therefore greatly reduce the power losses in parallel converter modules. Good current balance among the parallel LED strings and a high energy efficiency in the range of 86-88% has been achieved for a 21W practical prototype formed with 3 parallel strings. © 2010 IEEE.

    Analysed small signal state-space model of an active rectifier

    This paper presents a small signal state-space model of an active rectifier. The model considers the reference frame, the variation of frequency and control dynamics. It is suitable for analysing small signal stability of active rectifier loads in networks where a small load perturbation may cause a frequency disturbance. The model is formed by separating the active rectifier into sub sections. Each subsection is modelled independently before being consolidated into a single small signal state-space equation. A sensitivity analysis of the active rectifier is also presented which identifies the states most associated with each mode. This indicates possible feedback signals for the design of controllers to improve the system stability. The model is tested using rapid prototyping power converters configured as the active rectifier itself and the system load. The laboratory arrangement allows the active rectifier to be connected to either the public network via isolation transformers or a private network where the voltage and frequency are fully controllable. During the experimentation the active rectifier is shown to have negative impedance characteristics which are known to cause destabilising effects in networks.

    Wind farm output smoothing through coordinated control

    This paper presents a new method of using coordinated control and short term wind speed prediction to smooth the output of an array of wind turbines. The proposed controller uses knowledge of the kinetic energy storage potential in the rotor disc to allow production of pre-determined power profiles for periods of around 60s from variable wind inputs. Previous studies have shown that there are large peaks in wind power variability in the minutes timescale which is within the ability of a control system to reduce. This variation will cause issues with balancing systems within the local grid, as such it is beneficial to remove it. Results of tests to the system are presented which show a significant reduction in wind farm output power variability without a significant drop in output power. Comparisons with the natural smoothing effect are also presented and show that despite the significant smoothing found in large and distributed wind farms, there is still a possibility to improve the output.

    Transient Thermal Modeling of an Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) Machine Using a Hybrid Thermal Model

    This paper presents the development of a hybrid thermal model for the EVO Electric AFM 140 Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machine as used in hybrid and electric vehicles. The adopted approach is based on a hybrid lumped parameter and finite difference method. The proposed method divides each motor component into regular elements which are connected together in a thermal resistance network representing all the physical connections in all three dimensions. The element shape and size are chosen according to the component geometry to ensure consistency. The fluid domain is lumped into one region with averaged heat transfer parameters connecting it to the solid domain. Some model parameters are obtained from Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation and empirical data. The hybrid thermal model is described by a set of coupled linear first order differential equations which is discretised and solved iteratively to obtain the temperature profile. The computation involved is low and thus the model is suitable for transient temperature predictions. The maximum error in temperature prediction is 3.4% and the mean error is consistently lower than the mean error due to uncertainty in measurements. The details of the model development, temperature predictions and suggestions for design improvements are presented in this paper.
