Boundary controller for dynamic voltage restorers to achieve fast dynamic response
, Conference Proceedings - IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition - APEC, Vol: 2006, Pages: 1379-1384The performance of using second-order switching surface in boundary control of dynamic voltage restorers (DVR) for improving the voltage stability of power system is examined. The switching surface is derived to estimate the state trajectory movement of the DVR after a hypothesized switching action. It results in a high state trajectory velocity along the switching surface. This phenomenon accelerates the trajectory moving towards the target operating point. The proposed boundary control method has been studied with computer simulations, as well as a low-power prototype. The dynamic responses of the DVR with different voltage sags and different loads, including a resistive load, inductive load and nonlinear load have been examined. It has been shown that the proposed boundary control scheme can achieve a faster transient and damping responses than the other control methods. © 2006 IEEE.

Experimental study on acoustic resonance phenomena in ageing high-intensity discharge lamps
, IEE Proceedings: Science, Measurement and Technology, Vol: 153, Pages: 181-187, ISSN: 1350-2344It is widely thought that ageing a metal halide (MH) lamp will result in changes in the acoustic resonance eigenfrequencies but to date no experimental data on this topic has been reported in the literature. A study on the influence of the operating time on the stability of low-wattage MH lamps is now presented. It is shown that the age of a lamp does not affect the fundamental acoustic eigenfrequency values. The upper limit of the frequency of the highest acoustic resonance band at which the arc will become unstable is not affected by the age of the lamp. However, the lamp age does influence the extent of instability inside the lamp with the lamp voltage significantly increasing. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2006.

Regularity properties of optimal controls for problems with time-varying state and control constraints
, NONLINEAR ANAL-THEOR, Vol: 65, Pages: 448-474, ISSN: 0362-546XIn this paper we report new results. on the regularity of optimal controls for dynamic optimization problems with functional inequality state constraints, a convex time-dependent control constraint and a coercive cost function. Recently, it has been shown that the linear independence condition on active state constraints, present in the earlier literature, can be replaced by a less restrictive, positive linear independence condition, that requires linear independence merely with respect to non-negative weighting parameters, provided the control constraint set is independent of the time variable. We show that, if the control constraint set, regarded as a time-dependent multifunction, is merely Lipschitz continuous with respect to the time variable, then optimal controls can fail to be Lipschitz continuous. In these circumstances, however, a weaker Holder continuity-like regularity property can be established. On the other hand, Lipschitz continuity of optimal controls is guaranteed for time-varying control sets under a positive linear independence hypothesis, when the control constraint sets are described, at each time, by a finite collection of functional inequalities.. The Shifted Rayleigh Mixture Filter for Bearings-only Tracking of Manoeuvering Targets
, IEEE Trans Signal Processing, Vol: 55, Pages: 3218-3226, ISSN: 1053-587XThis paper introduces the shifted Rayleigh mixture filter (SRMF), which is based on jump Markov linear systems. The formulation permits the presence of clutter. For bearings-only tracking problems involving maneuvering targets, the conditional density of the target state given the available measurements evolves as a growing mixture of probability density functions associated with a history of manoeuvre "modes." Similar to other "mixture" algorithms, the SRMF approximates this conditional density by a Gaussian mixture of fixed order. Unlike the extended or unscented Kalman filters,, the shifted Rayleigh filter incorporates an exact calculation of the posterior density, when the prior is assumed to be Gaussian, given the latest bearings measurement. Computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm.
