    Coprime factorisation approach in designing multi-input stabiliser for damping electromechanical oscillations in power systems

    The application of loop shaping in H-infinity control design through a dual-input power system stabiliser (PSS) in a benchmark power system model is demonstrated. The PSS stabilises two key system poles contributing to critical electromechanical oscillations involving turbine generators and electrical network. The IEEE First Benchmark Model has been considered in this study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control. A linearised model of the system is pre- and post-compensated using loop-shaping approach. The problem of robust stabilisation of a normalised coprime factor plant description is formulated into a generalised H-infinity problem and the solution is obtained analytically. The performance of the controller shows robustness to electromechanical modes, which were otherwise very poorly damped or undamped depending on operating conditions. The robustness is further validated in Simulink, including nonlinearities and device saturation limits.

    Approximation of the feasible parameter set in worst-case identification of Hammerstein models

    The estimation of the Feasible Parameter Set (FPS) for Hammerstein models in a worst-case setting is considered. A bounding procedure is determined both for polytopic and ellipsoidic uncertainties. It consists in the projection of the FPS of the extended parameter vector onto suitable subspaces and in the solution of convex optimization problems which provide Uncertainties Intervals of the model parameters. The bounds obtained are tighter than in the previous approaches.

    A lamp power control scheme for dimmable electronic ballasts to minimize the temperature effect on the lamp brightness

    A hybrid lamp power control scheme for dimmable electronic ballasts is proposed. Apart from adjusting the brightness of the lamp, the proposed method can also minimize the ambient temperature effect on light output. Instead of regulating the lamp current, the proposed method is based on regulating the power supplying the lamp. First, the dimming operation is achieved by regulating the dc voltage at the ballast inverter input. Second, variation of the lamp power (due to the temperature effect) is regulated by sensing the inverter average input current to adjust the switching frequency of the inverter. An 18 W prototype has been built and tested. The lamp power and luminous output of the prototype at the ambient temperature from 5°C to 35° C have been studied. © 2005 IEEE.

    Tracking control for constrained monotone systems

    Tracking control of nonlinear systems subject to constraints on the input is a challenging issue in control design. Forcing saturation on a previously designed controller may in general lead to destabilization or at least result in performance losses. Hereby it is shown that for a certain class of nonlinear monotone systems it is possible to design a suitable static nonlinear output feedback which stabilizes the system and preserves stability under control saturation.     Three-dimensional space vector modulation for a four-leg three-level inverter

    The trend toward deploying inverters in interfacing distributed generation (DG) systems to the grid has raised the importance of control and power quality aspects of inverters. Using multilevel inverters in DG systems, one can achieve high power quality outputs with realistic switching frequency. The four-leg three-level inverter topology is proposed for DG applications in three-phase four-wire systems, for its full dc-link utilization and low voltage ripple on the dc-link capacitors. A novel algorithm for three-dimensional space vector modulation (3D-SVM) is proposed for controlling a four-leg three-level inverter. The issues of vector selection and switching sequence determination are described. Simulation results are compared with those of a three-leg three-level inverter to assess the effectiveness of the proposed 3D-SVM and to establish the advantages of the four-leg three-level topology over conventional three-leg three-level one.

    Case study of a highly-reliable dimmable road lighting system with intelligent remote control

    This paper presents the phase-one results of a case study of a dimmable road lighting system with intelligent remote control. This is the first large-scale installation of such system for about 8000 street lamps in China and the phase-one of the project involves 1350 lamps. Patent-pending central control dimming systems, that can turn existing "non-dimmable" electromagnetic lighting systems into dimmable ones without major rewiring or replacement of equipment, have been installed in Heshan City, China since September 2004. This central dimming system provides a self-recovery feature and ensures high lighting system availability, as it will automatically withdraw itself from the lighting network if it cannot work normally. By retaining existing electromagnetic ballasts in all lamp posts, the use of this central dimming system does not require any expensive electronic ballasts. More importantly, electronic ballasts may help save some energy for a few years of their short lifetime but will become electronic waste and pollutants for many hundreds of years. The proposed system in this paper provides an environmentally-friendly and energy-saving solution for dimmable road lighting systems. Most of the advantages of electromagnetic ballasts such as long lifetime, recyclability of iron chokes, high reliability and immunity against extreme weather conditions and lightning are kept. During the 9-month operation, none of the streets with such dimming system installed suffers light blackout. It has also been independently confirmed that there was no increase in crime and traffic accident rates. No compliant has been received from residents by the road lighting management company. In phase-one of this project, an overall energy saving of 27% has been recorded without adversely affecting quality of life.
