    Analysis and spectral characteristics of a spread-spectrum technique for conducted EMI suppression

    Frequency modulation (FM) and random switching methods have been used for reducing conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) in power converters. Limited theoretical studies and comparisons of these schemes, however, are available. In this paper, a detailed analysis and the spectral characteristics of a random carrier-frequency (RCF) technique for suppressing conducted EMI in an offline switched-mode power supply are presented. The analysis provides a theoretical platform for studying the characteristics of this random switching scheme. The level of randomness is defined for the RCF scheme and varied in the converter example so that its effects on the power spectra can be demonstrated. Theoretical predictions of the spectral characteristics of this scheme are confirmed with measurements. The RCF scheme has been compared with the standard constant-frequency pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme and the FM scheme. Comparisons of their spectral performance show that the RCF scheme has better conducted EMI suppression than the FM and standard PWM schemes.

    A comparative investigation on the use of random modulation schemes for dc/dc converters

    A comparative investigation on the use of random modulation schemes for dc/dc converters is presented. The modulation schemes under consideration include randomized pulse position modulation, randomized pulsewidth modulation (PWM), and randomized carrier-frequency modulation with fixed and variable duty cycle. The paper emphasizes the suitability and applicability of each scheme in dc/dc converters. Issues addressed include the effectiveness of randomness level on spreading the dominating frequencies that normally exist in constant-frequency PWM schemes, and the low-frequency power spectral density (PSD) of each scheme. The validity of the analyses is confirmed experimentally by using a dc/dc buck converter operating in continuous conduction mode. The PSD of the output under each scheme will be presented and compared. © 2000 IEEE.

    Characterization of coreless printed circuit board (PCB) transformers

    In this paper, coreless printed-circuit-board transformers are characterized. A range of coreless printed circuit board (PCB) transformers with different geometric parameters have been fabricated and tested. Based on a recently reported analytic method, the self inductance of these transformers is calculated. This analytical method is also extended to cover the prediction of the transformers' mutual inductance. All calculated parameters have been confirmed with measurements for the frequency range from 100 kHz to 30 MHz. These results provide useful information for the optimal design of coreless PCB transformers.

    A bidirectional ac-dc power converter with power factor correction

    This paper presents new operation and performance of a thyristor-based ac-dc current-controlled boost-type converter that allows bidirectional power handling capability and provides input power factor correction and a near-sinusoidal input current waveform. The new converter can reduce harmonic pollution and disturbance on the supply mains. The feature of bidirectional power flow allows the stored energy in loads, such as motors, to regenerate back to the supply source, leading to an increase in overall energy efficiency and possibly a reduction in the size of the dc link capacitor. The operation is confirmed with the successful implementation of an experimental prototype. © 2000 IEEE.

    Coreless planar Printed-Circuit-Board (PCB) transformers - A fundamental concept for signal and energy transfer

    Magnetic cores have been used in transformers for over a century. In this paper, the authors present a fundamental concept of using "coreless" printed-circuit-board (PCB) transformers. With the aid of a high-frequency equivalent circuit, the use and basic characteristics of coreless PCB transformers are described. Optimal operating conditions for minimum input power requirement and maximum efficiency operations are identified. Coreless PCB transformers have the advantages of low costs, very high power density, no limitation due to magnetic cores, no magnetic loss and ease of manufacturing. They have the potential to be developed in microcircuits. A printed planar PCB transformer with a diameter of about 1.0cm and power capability of 19W has been successfully tested. The power density of the PCB transformer demonstrated in this paper is 24 W/cm 2. The maximum efficiency can be greater than 90%. The analysis has been confirmed with experiments. Coreless printed transformers have great potential in applications in which stringent height and space requirements have to be met. © 2000 IEEE.

    Development of a switched-capacitor dc-dc converter with bidirectional power flow

    This brief presents a switched-capacitor dc-dc converter that offers features of voltage step-down, voltage step-up, and bidirectional power flow. Concept of energy transfer is achieved by using two current-controlled bidirectional converter cells, which are operating in antiphase. Good regulation capability and continuous input current waveform are other substantial advantages that facilitate practical realization and reduce electromagnetic interference with other circuits and supply networks. State-space averaging technique is applied to study the static and dynamic characteristics. A 20-W, 5-V-9-V prototype has been built and has an overall efficiency of over 80% in all operations.

    Spectral characteristics of randomly switched PWM DC/DC converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode

    This paper addresses a comparative study of the spectral characteristics of four random-switching schemes that apply to the basic pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) dc/dc converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). They include randomized pulse position modulation, randomized pulsewidth modulation, and randomized carrier frequency modulation with fixed duty cycle and with fixed duty time, respectively. Mathematical models that characterize the input current and output voltage of the three basic PWM converters operating in DCM are derived. In particular, the effectiveness of spreading the dominant switching harmonics in the input current that normally exist in the standard PWM scheme and the introduction of low-frequency harmonics in the output voltage with respect to the randomness level are investigated. The validity of the models and analyses are confirmed experimentally by using a dc/dc buck converter.

    Actively clamped bidirectional flyback converter

    An actively clamped bidirectional flyback converter is proposed. The converter's operation is examined in detail. All switches in the converter have zero-voltage-switching characteristics. A low-frequency behavior model and small-signal transfer functions are derived. It is found that the flow of current is directly under the control of the duty cycle, and that the transformer's leakage inductance has a significant effect on the control characteristic of the converter. It is expected that such bidirectional converters will find wide applications in the interconnection of multiple sources of dc power to a common bus (e.g., in a dc uninterruptible power supply). Simulation and experiment results are also presented.

    Development of a multistage current-controlled switched-capacitor step-down DC/DC converter with continuous input current

    This paper presents the design and analysis of a low-profile multistage current-controlled switched-capacitor (SC) step-down dc/dc converter. The converter not only exhibits all advantages of classical SC converters, but also features good regulation capability and continuous input current waveform, resulting in low conducted electromagnetic interference with the supply network. The concept of energy transfer is achieved by paralleling the input and output of two step-down converter cells and operating them in antiphase. The voltage conversion ratio is determined by controlling the charging trajectories of the capacitors in each cell. As the circuit is unnecessary to use any inductive elements, possibilities of integrated circuit fabrication and high power density are promising. By applying the state-space averaging technique, a third-order state-space model for an n-stage converter is derived. Static and small-signal dynamic behaviors of the converter are investigated. A 70-W 48-V/12 V converter is implemented. Analytical predictions are verified with experimental measurements.

    Soft switched AC/DC power converter and their EMI property improvement

    Soft-switching techniques can improve DC/DC power converter's efficiency and reduce its EMI. The method is attractive to the unity-power-factor AC/DC converter in the view of the EMC requirement for lower switching noise. A soft-switched boost converter has been studied in topology analysis, PSPICE simulation and circuit experiment. The reduction effects of AC/DC converter EMI emission by using soft-switching techniques and its limitation are investigated.

    Some electromagnetic aspects of coreless PCB transformers

    In this paper, some EMI aspects of using coreless PCB transformers are addressed. Based on the antenna theory, the radiated power of a coreless PCB transformer is estimated and found to be negligible. The electromagnetic field plot of a power electronic circuit using a gate drive circuit isolated by a coreless PCB transformer has been recorded. The major radiated EMI source in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz is found to be the copper tracks of the power circuit, where switching transients occur, rather than the coreless PCB transformer. Coreless PCB transformers essentially operate at relatively low frequency (8 MHz in this case) by near-field magnetic coupling. Experimental results have confirmed that the application of coreless PCB transformer in gate drive circuit will not impose any serious EMI problem on the power electronic circuit.

    Coreless printed circuit board (PCB) transformers with high power density and high efficiency

    The authors report the use of a coreless printed circuit board transformer for power conversion with very high power density and efficiency. A coreless PCB transformer with an outermost radius of ∼1 cm and 19 turns for both the primary and secondary windings can transfer 19W at an efficiency of 90%, resulting in a record power density of 24W/cm2. The power density and energy efficiency of a coreless PCB transformer are higher than those of core-based microtransformers. Coreless transformers are simpler in structure, easier to implement in silicon wafer and cheaper than core-based planar transformers.
