Forward completeness, unboundedness observability, and their Lyapunov characterizations
, Systems and Control Letters, Vol: 38, Pages: 209-217, ISSN: 0167-6911A finite-dimensional continuous-time system is forward complete if solutions exist globally, for positive time. This paper shows that forward completeness can be characterized in a necessary and sufficient manner by means of smooth scalar growth inequalities. Moreover, a version of this fact is also proved for systems with inputs, and a generalization is also provided for systems with outputs and a notion (unboundedness observability) of relative completeness. We apply these results to obtain a bound on reachable states in terms of energy-like estimates of inputs. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Intrinsic robustness of global asymptotic stability
, Systems and Control Letters, Vol: 38, Pages: 297-307, ISSN: 0167-6911Equivalence is shown for discrete time systems between global asymptotic stability and the so-called integral Input-to-State Stability. The latter is a notion of robust stability with respect to exogenous disturbances which informally translates into the statement "no matter what is the initial condition, if the energy of the inputs is small, then the state must eventually be small". © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Analysis of random PWM switching methods for three-level power inverters
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 14, Pages: 1156-1163, ISSN: 0885-8993This paper presents a generalized theory which covers both two-level and three-level random pulsewidth modulation (RPWM) schemes. Various three-level RPWM schemes with low switching frequency are presented and compared with two-level schemes. Three-level RPWM schemes have less discrete harmonics and continuous noise than two-level RPWM schemes. They have desirable spectral characteristics and can be employed in high-voltage inverter-fed motor drives. Measurements have confirmed the theory and the attractive features of three-level RPWM schemes.

A zero-current-switching PWM flyback converter with a simple auxiliary switch
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 14, Pages: 329-342, ISSN: 0885-8993A simple and effective approach of turning an isolated hard-switched converter design into a soft-switched one is presented. By adding an auxiliary winding, switch, and small capacitor to the conventional pulsewidth modulation (PWM)-isolated flyback converter, all switches and diodes are softly turned on and off. No extra active or passive voltage clamp circuit is needed to suppress voltage stress on the switching devices that were usually found in classical converters. A zero-current-switching (ZCS) PWM flyback converter topology with multiple outputs is analyzed and examined. The proposal inherently utilizes the leakage inductance of the "flyback" transformer to achieve ZCS of all switching devices. A complete steady-state dc analysis and the operating principle are described. The performance of an 80-W experimental converter prototype with dual-voltage outputs is included.
