Steady state efficiency of a synchronous reluctance drive

    , ISSN: 0963-3308

The performance of a synchronous reluctance drive can be optimized with regard to such parameters as power factor and transient response (or rate of change of torque). Constant current in inductive axis control yields the best transient response and is often termed vector control. Empirical models are derived to consider the effect of different control schemes on such parameters as steady state losses and low speed torque ripple.

Development of an induction motor drive phase model based on the TLM method

, International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields, Vol: 8, Pages: 29-49, ISSN: 0894-3370

This paper describes a phase model of an induction motor based on Transmission‐Line Modelling technique. Its main advantage compared to the existing TLM d‐q model is the possibility of using a small part of the stator self‐inductance of each pahase as a link model to connect the motor to external sources and drives. Unlike the d‐q model, the phase model does not therefore require any additional components for connection purposes. The application of the phase model is demonstrated by and example representing a traction drive ciruit. Identical simulation results to those obtained from a different study based on a d‐q model are derived. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Solution of the differential Riccati equation using the transmission line modelling (TLM) technique

, Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering, Vol: 11, Pages: 25-32, ISSN: 1069-8299

In this communication, the application of the transmission line modelling (TLM) technique to the solution of the differential Riccati equation is described. A comparison is made between the TLM, fourth‐order Runge‐Kutta and the first‐order Gear methods, for the case where one is applying the Kalman filter to the estimation of a voltage in a passive analogue circuit. In the particular example studied, the state equation is second‐order. It is found that, when the system is underdamped, the fourth‐order Runge‐Kutta method has the best performance, followed by the TLM method. When the system is overdamped and stiff, the TLM method yields results that are closest to the analytical solution. Finally, a discussion is presented of the effects of errors in the TLM solution of the Riccati equation on the accuracy of the solution to the continuous Kalman filter estimation equation. Discrete-time simulation of an inverter-fed synchronous motor drive

, Electric Machines and Power Systems, Vol: 23, Pages: 81-91, ISSN: 0731-356X

This paper describes the discrete simulation of an inverter-fed synchronous motor drive using the transmission-line modelling (TLM) method. The TLM approach enables the drive model to to developed without setting up any differential equations. Comparison of the TLM and Runge Kutta 2nd and 4th order methods shows that TLM method is more efficient in terms of model derivation and computing time. Examples of simulations are included and they agree well with measurements. © 1995 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Modeling Non-Linear Power Electronic Circuits with the Transmission-Line Modeling Technique

, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 10, Pages: 48-54, ISSN: 0885-8993

This paper describes a non-linear transmission-line modeling technique that can be employed to model power electronic circuits. The non-linearities that can be dealt with include the switching action of the power devices as well as the non-linear behavior of saturable inductors and multi-layer capacitors. With this new non-linear technique, the transmission-line modeling technique can now be used as a generalized discrete-time modeling tool for power electronic circuits. The non-linear technique is demonstrated in two examples and the simulations are found to be good. © 1995, IEEE. All rights reserved.

A Dynamic Equivalent Circuit Model for Solid Magnetic Cores for High Switching Frequency Operations

, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 10, Pages: 791-795, ISSN: 0885-8993

This paper presents a dynamic equivalent circuit model of solid magnetic cores for high frequency operations in power electronic circuits. The effects of eddy current, domain wall motion, and hysteresis are taken into account by distributed equivalent resistors and distributed nonideal differential inductors, respectively. The Preisach hysteresis model is employed to simulate hysteresis effects in the inductors. A recently developed discrete transform technique based on the transmission line method is adopted to develop a discrete model for numerical dynamic analysis. The resultant model is just a simple tridiagonal system of equations. Good agreement between computer simulations and measurements has confirmed the validity of the new model. © 1995 IEEE

Comparative study of asynchronous and synchronous discrete delta modulation schemes for DC-AC power conversion

    , Pages: 339-344, ISSN: 0275-9306

This paper presents a comparative study on the performance of two discrete delta modulation (DDM) schemes for DC-AC power conversion, namely the asynchronous (ADDM) scheme and the synchronous (SDDM) scheme. The ADDM scheme operates with asynchronous switching frequency and generates harmonics that spread over a wide range of frequency. The SDDM scheme operates with constant switching frequency and generates harmonics at well defined frequencies that correspond to the switching frequency and its multiples. Both schemes have been implemented successfully in a TMS320C25 processor. Experimental and computed results are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of both schemes are discussed.

Microprocessor-based random PWM schemes for DC-AC power conversion

    , Pages: 307-312, ISSN: 0275-9306

This paper compares and evaluates two classes of microprocessor-based random PWM (RPWM) real-time generation schemes for DC-AC power conversion. The practical performance of the RPWM schemes based on mathematical and logical approaches are examined. The proposed schemes exhibit excellent EMC and harmonic content with all low and high order harmonics suppressed, and are suitable for both MOSFET and IGBT inverters.

Three-phase to DC converter combining controlled step-down of voltage and bi-directional power flow

    , Pages: 295-300, ISSN: 0537-9989

A new configuration for a three-phase bi-directional power converter (AC-DC and DC-AC) is presented. The converter is operated as a step-down converter where the output voltage can be controlled in the range of 0 to 1.5 Vph. The power switch configuration is simpler than the conventional anti-parallel bridge used for bi-directional step-down rectification. It has nine controllable switches and twelve diodes. In the rectifier and inverter mode, line current can be sinusoidally regulated with unity displacement factor. This complies with the EN standard on harmonic currents. Synchronous PWM is implemented in a field programmable gate array and regulation of the output is achieved with a PID controller. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed converter system.

IGBT turn-off characteristics and high frequency application

    , ISSN: 0963-3308

Use of a parallel MOSFET can provide a method of reducing the turn off loss associated with IGBTs and achieve a composite effect of low on-state loss and low switching loss. The technique discussed in this paper will be able to increase the effective minimum on-time of the device and this in itself can provide a limitation on the switching frequencies that can be achieved.
