Field programmable gate array implementation of a neural network accelerator
, ISSN: 0963-3308The use of a neural network to learn the nonlinear current profiles required to minimise torque ripple in a switched reluctance motor (SRM), at low to medium speeds, has been demonstrated using a digital signal processor (DSP). However, the DSP (Texas Instruments TMS320C25) implementation of a neural network in this application is a limiting factor on motor speed (if maximum current profile integrity is to be maintained). Fortunately, the neural network architecture used (cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC)) is amenable to hardware implementation a point noted by Albus in one of his original papers and evidenced by at least one previous field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation. Guided by the requirements of the switched reluctance motor application, a prototype accelerator based on a Xilinx XC4000 FPGA implementation of the neural network has been constructed that operates an order of magnitude faster than the DSP implementation.

Five-phase switched reluctance motor: design and performance
, ISSN: 0963-3308This paper presents a design and experimental results for a five-phase switched reluctance motor drive. The system improves SR drive performance by increasing the number of phases without increasing the number of switching devices. A comparison is made of the torque speed characteristics of the motor when fed from the proposed converter and a asymmetric half bridge. This study shows that the proposed converter matches the conventional converter over a very wide speed range.

Decoupled Simulation of DC-Linked Power Electronic Systems Using Transmission-Line Links
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 9, Pages: 85-91, ISSN: 0885-8993This paper describes the application of the transmission-line modeling (TLM) method to the decoupled simulation of d.c. linked power electronic systems. Stiff capacitively or inductively smoothed dc links in power electronic systems can be modeled as two-port transmission-line links using the TLM method. The TLM links enable the circuits connected by the links to be decoupled and simulated as individual circuits, resulting in smaller system matrices, possibility of parallel computation and reduction in computing time. Interaction between these linked circuits can be realised by exchanging the incident pulses at both ends of the transmission-line links. Computer simulations of an ac to dc converter used in a laboratory confirms the simplicity of the TLM decoupled simulation approach. © 1994 IEEE

On-line parameter measurement of induction machines
, Pages: 992-996The problem of degradation in performance of an induction machine controller resulting from parameter variation is tackled using an on-line measurement technique which may be used as an alternative or supplement to parameter adaption. Experimental data shows that a test similar to the locked-rotor test may be successfully performed by injecting a low magnitude, high frequency voltage set into the motor supply. Experimental results show consistent measures of induction machine stator and rotor resistance parameters are obtained. Guidelines for maintaining accuracy under various operating conditions are discussed. A custom PWM generator is developed which improves the experimental process and a detection system using a microprocessor is proposed.

Analysis and Comparison of Real-Time Sine-Wave Generation for PWM Circuits
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 8, Pages: 46-54, ISSN: 0885-8993The paper presents four methods for hardware and software generation in real time of sine waves suitable for PWM circuits. The sine waves are derived from a truncated modified cosine Taylor series, wt(π—wt) function, a digitally filtered trapezoid, and a second-order differential equation. Triplen injection is incorporated by the addition of a defined magnitude triangular waveform of three times the fundamental frequency. Each sine-wave generating technique is implemented, as applicable, in a programmable logic cell array and/or in microprocessor-based software. In each case, the output spectra and total harmonic distortion are compared with computer-simulated results. © 1993 IEEE

Spectral Characteristics of Resonant-Link Inverters
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 8, Pages: 562-570, ISSN: 0885-8993Improvement in the frequency spectrum of resonant-link inverters does not match the increase in switching frequency because of the restriction of integral pulse modulation schemes such as delta modulation. Comparisons of low-frequency pulse width modulation with high-frequency delta modulation show that the spread spectrum of delta modulation may cause problems owing to low-frequency harmonics, despite a better total harmonic distortion. An assessment of total losses, for a bipolar junction transistor Darlington example, is used to set the operating frequency in each modulation case. © 1993 IEEE
