Professor Kwok-Fai Chung is a leading structural engineer, academic, and researcher, renowned for his expertise in steel construction.
Prof. Chung earned his Ph.D. in Steel Structures in 1988 before working at the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) in the UK as a Research and Senior Research Engineer. After returning to Hong Kong in 1995, he spent a year in industry as a Chartered Structural Engineer before joining Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he became a full professor in 2005. Since 2015, he has served as the Founding Director of the Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch).
A dedicated contributor to the international structural engineering community, Prof. Chung has played a key role in advancing steel construction technology, working closely with IStructE and SCI for over three decades. He has authored six design guides and technical documents, including chapters on steel-concrete composite structures in the 7th edition of the Steel Designers’ Manual, a definitive reference on European Structural Codes.
Prof. Chung served as an IStructE Council Member (2013–2016) and twice as Vice President (2017–2018, 2019–2020). His contributions have been recognised with awards from the Government of Hong Kong SAR, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, and leading professional associations.
