Harnessing the psychological benefits of challenging video games for healthcare interventions
Abstract
Challenging video games (such as the Soulsborne games) have been shown to foster resilience, self-confidence, and emotional regulation, offering psychological benefits that extend beyond gameplay. Unlike traditional player-centric design, these games use difficulty as a means to reward persistence and mastery.
This PhD research aims to extract the design elements which promote these benefits and adapt them into novel healthcare interventions. Potential applications include enhancing resilience and motivation in patients and promoting preventive health practices, such as mental health management and healthy lifestyle habits, among the general population.
