After completing his MSc in Applied Machine Learning, Philippos joined IBM, as a Data Scientist. He leads teams in delivering Natural Language Processing and Generative AI solutions in the Financial Services sector.
Where did you complete your undergraduate degree, and what was your field of study?
I graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton.
What motivated you to choose the Applied Machine Learning MSc at Imperial?
I've always been a tech enthusiast - I even ran my own Tech YouTube channel when I was 14. The thrill of innovating new ideas, alongside the challenge of programming, ignited a passion in me for AI - a field where every discovery feels like a step closer to the future I imagined as a kid. While studying Electronic Engineering, I came across multiple AI use-cases that piqued my intellectual curiosity, and I even worked on building a fire surveillance startup using Computer Vision and Deep Learning algorithms. My entrepreneurial spirit and vision of launching an impact-driven AI startup further fueled my decision to pursue an AML degree at Imperial College London, where I believe my skills align with what I see as the most transformative technological revolution of our time.
Can you tell us about the content of the AML MSc degree cousre?
The MSc in Applied Machine Learning offered a balanced mix of theoretical foundations and hands-on modules. It equipped me with the skills to design, develop, and evaluate machine learning systems, closely mirroring real-world scenarios. Through modules such as Deep Learning, Speech Processing, and the fundamentals of AI, I gained invaluable technical expertise - still relevant and valuable in my current role at IBM. Moreover, the program enhanced my soft skills as it offered an interesting mix of group assignments, presentations, and collaborative projects. Lastly, the Individual Research Project allowed me to delve deep into applied ML, with invaluable supervision from industry-leading researchers.
What aspect of the MSc did you enjoy the most?
I truly enjoyed the depth of the material taught, and the variety of assignments. We frequently explored the fundamentals and mathematics behind complex algorithms, which are typically treated as black boxes, while clearly demonstrating their real-life applications.
How has your experience been as a student in London?
During my time as a student, I experienced London's distinctive blend of academic vigor and cultural diversity. While some days can be rainy, my experience has been transformative. Dynamic and teeming with opportunities, London is an excellent place for AI researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs pursuing competitive and fulfilling careers.
And how about your experience at Imperial?
I’ve found Imperial College London to be an incredible incubator for ambitious students, including myself. The University’s resources and extensive network empower students to turn their ideas into reality, even beyond the classroom. Support during my studies has been incredible, and lecturers are world-renowned experts in their fields; it really felt like we were learning from the best. Finally, I met like-minded students from all over the world and made lifelong friends.
