Below you will find details of the Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering Project.

Project updates

Phase 1 of the project connected the Mechanical Engineering and Skempton Buildings to provide shared student teaching and learning spaces. The works also provided a new flume within the existing Hydrodynamics Laboratory.

Works were completed September 2012.

Phase 1 works

For Phases 2-4, a detailed briefing process was completed in late 2011 which resulted in a comprehensive Stage B Briefing Report which was signed off by all users in January 2012. The Design Team completed the detailed design in 2012.

Funding was approved for Phase 2 in November 2012.

Phase 2 commenced upon the relocation of the Centre for Environmental Policy from Levels 2 and 3 of the Mechanical Engineering Building Annex, providing the area in which decant space is being created. This phase involved the preparation of decant space for office, research and student space located in the northern and southern blocks of the City & Guilds Building, which will then be refurbished.

Phase 2 works phase was completed in September 2015.

The Phase 3 area is the core of the building and involves refurbishment of all lecture theatres and teaching spaces, along with the main concourse.  Also within the Phase 3 project scope is an area of infilling between the Black Tower and the C&G Building on levels 5, 6 and 7, the creation of a new roof plant exposure to an existing level 6 flat roof area and the completion of over-cladding, replacement and refurbishment works to original façade areas that were not undertaken as part of Phase 2.

Phase 4 involves the reconfiguration of the 3 story Annexe at the front of the C&G Building to create Aeronautics Laboratories and Workshops to facilitate the move of the Department in July 2017.

The Aerial Robotics Laboratory will commence construction late 2016 and will be part of a new build extension to the West elevation to create open plan office spaces and the double height Flight Arena.  The Lab will provide a new facility for flying robot prototype development and testing, which will form the UK’s leading centre for research in this exciting and fast-growing field.
