About the talk

The monitoring of safety critical structures is an area of research that has gained a lot of attention in the past few decades. A key focus of the structural performance group at Cardiff University has been to advance structural health monitoring technologies, primarily Acoustic Emission (AE) and Acousto-Ultrasonic (AU) as well as develop experimental and computational techniques to enable the in-service monitoring of structures. The group has adopted a practical approach which has yielded many successes. Dr Marks will give an overview of the industrially focused applied research being conducted at Cardiff which includes numerical modelling techniques which enable AE sources to be located successfully on real complex structures, sensor placement optimisation strategies, a low-power, wireless AE system being developed for monitoring aircraft structures and a portable, low-cost inspection system designed for inspecting personal protective equipment.
