Panel Discussion

In this panel discussion in, Dr Heather Ford (Queen Mary University of London) will introduce the topic with a short talk, followed by a panel discussion by a panel with Prof Genevieve Boshoff (National Nuclear Laboratories), Prof Stephen Curry (Imperial College London), Dr Elisa De Ranieri (Nature Communications), chaired by Melanie Lee (Imperial College London).

Who gets to speak? Voices minoritized at scientific conferences

As scientists, we attend conferences and present research to share science, find jobs,  secure funding, and to gain recognition. But does everyone get a fair chance to speak at these conferences?

Dr Heather Ford used a dataset of 80,000 abstracts from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the world’s largest physical sciences conference, to test whether certain ethnic or racial groups and women received talks proportionate to their size in the population.
