Data shows that becoming an entrepreneur is a choice largely influenced by society. Women are only half as likely as men to finally launch an enterprise, with a recent report commissioned by the UK Government showing that only 8.6% of UK women planned to start a business in the next three years, compared to 14.3% of men. Dr Maria Vigliotti is an alumna and former academic of the Department of Computing, Imperial College London. Advising major players in the UK nuclear industry on smart device security, Dr Vigliotti has worked with several start-up companies and published over thirty papers in peer-reviewed international academic journals and conferences. Dr Vigliotti now runs Sandblocks Consulting, a boutique consultancy specialising in blockchain technology and cybersecurity, and holds a grant by The Royal Society to collaborate with Imperial College London to promote women entrepreneurship. Dr Vigliotti is the author of “The Executive Guide to Blockchain” (Palgrave Macmillan, Feb 2020).
