Abstract: Ships often burn heavy fuel oil, typically releasing particulate pollution known to modify cloud properties. These releases are known to create linear cloud formations, known as ship-tracks. As they represent an isolated impact of ship emissions on cloud properties, investigations of the mechanisms of their formation can provide insights into the effects of large-scale changes in aerosol concentrations on the climate.
This project involves using the Dutch Atmospheric Large-Eddy Simulation (DALES) coupled with cloud-resolving microphysics schemes to model ship tracks. In my talk, I will discuss how these schemes can be implemented in LES and the approaches which are being taken to validate such models in this project.
