Abstract:Impact loading is a type of violent hydrodynamic loading event characterised by a large loading magnitude and a rapid rise to the maximum. Due to its large magnitude, impact loads have the potential to cause significant damages to offshore structures. However, the methods of predicting impact loading still incorporates large uncertainties, not least because of a lack of understanding of the underlying physics. In this presentation, I will mainly introduce my current progress in estimating impact loading time-history using drop test methods (experiments & numerical simulation), and discuss how I plan to transfer the results from drop tests to the prediction of wave impacts.
