Automorphic forms are at the heart of modern number theory and so understanding their properties are of great importance. One way to view these objects is from a representation theoretic viewpoint. In this talk I will give an overview of this representation theoretic viewpoint and the Whittaker model for GL_2. The main goal is to show how understanding the Whittaker model can provide new arithmetic information about automorphic forms.
