Join us for the launch of our new report, “Digital health in primary health care: current use and future opportunities in the Sub-Sharan African Region”, 12pm – 1pm BST on Tuesday 23 May.

Digital health promises to revolutionise health care delivery and address longstanding health system challenges, if developed and implemented across systems successfully. As national governments in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) work towards achieving universal health coverage, digital technology may be a powerful tool to support Primary Health Care (PHC) delivery.

The report sets out where digital technologies are being used to drive primary health care innovation across Sub-Saharan Africa, underpinned by examples and lessons learned from experts across the region. Our goal in creating this report is to provide a synthesis of current evidence and thought leadership in one place. We present the current use of digital health across health systems to frame future opportunities, the challenges and threats that must be addressed, providing recommendations to key stakeholder groups.The report has been produced by Imperial College London’s Institute of Global Health Innovation, in collaboration with Imperial’s Global Digital Health Unit and the African Forum for Primary Health Care (AfroPHC).

The event will include an introduction to the report and presentations from individuals and organisations utilising digital technologies across PHC in Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by an audience Q&A, with speakers including:

  • Prof Shabir Moosa – Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Wits University and World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) African Region President;
  • Priscillah Balirwa – Digital Health Manager, Living Goods;
  • Dr Nana Kwame Ayisi Boateng – Senior Lecturer, Department of Medicine, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
  • Niki O’Brien – Policy Fellow in Global Health, Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London;
  • Dr Mercy Nafula Wanjala, Family Physician, Executive Coordinator, Africa Forum for Primary Health Care(AfroPHC)
