The Beyond Ethnicity Career conference (BECC) is aimed at early career professionals in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine (STEMM) and business who are from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds or other minoritised groups.

This year’s theme is AI: Friend or Foe? Discover how emerging tech may impact your career. Attend talks on AI and creativity, developing your career in a new tech landscape, AI fairness and bias and the environmental impacts of using AI tools.

BECC aims to empower and equip individuals early in their careers from minoritised ethnicities with the tools and skills required to thrive in academia and beyond. This conference creates a space to expose you to inspiring role models and provides practical advice on how to make the most of AI in your careers, now and in the future.

Conference schedule

The conference will be a full-day event with a variety of talks, panels and networking opportunities.

The keynote talk will be from Anne-Marie Imafidon, co-founder of Stemettes, an award-winning social initiative dedicated to inspiring and promoting the next generation of young women in the STEM sectors. Since its inception 11 years ago, it has exposed more than 65,000 young people across Europe to Anne-Marie’s vision for a more diverse and balanced science and tech community. In 2022 she released her book She’s in CTRL a guidebook for women to take back tech.

The first 75 attendees who register and attend the conference will receive a free copy of Anne-Marie’s book.

Talks will include

  • AI and creativity
  • Innovating with Purpose: Women in AI Paving the Way for Inclusive Technology
  • A Day in the Life of an AI Professional
  • Social justice and environmental impacts of using AI tools

The Conference is organised by Imperial As One, the Imperial College for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Centre.
