Abstract: Tom will present an overview of his research reconciling the scaling laws for swash overtopping and their application to ocean beaches and reef fronted beaches and discuss models for bed shear stress and the flow convergence at wave fronts (dry bed surges). Highlights of an ongoing project on the Blue Economy CRC M4 wave energy converter will be presented if time permits.

Short Bio: Professor Tom Baldock is the Head of the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland. He obtained a B.Eng (1990) and Ph.D. (1995) from the Department of Civil Engineering, Imperial College, London, the latter under the supervision of Prof. Chris Swan. He was a lecturer in the Department for two years before moving to Queensland.

He teaches Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Engineering and Coastal Engineering. His research is primarily in the field of Coastal and Ocean Engineering, and including long waves, swash zone process and overtopping, and coral reef hydrodynamics and restoration. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Coastal Engineering and a corresponding member of Engineers Australia National Committee Coastal and Ocean (Australia).
