The seminar looks at the pre-war, wartime and post-war work of an organisation virtually forgotten today, the Czech Refugee Trust Fund. Despite the name, this was a British entity, established by Deed and answerable to the Home Office and Treasury, unlike the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, a charity funded by public donations to help German and Austrian, as well as Czechoslovak political and/or racial refugees at risk from the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia.
So great was the need that the Committee’s funds were exhausted by early 1939, and only the British government’s intervention saved the day. The Trust then took on much of the Committee’s welfare role until well after the war. Although there was much to criticise about the BCRC/CRTF, both organisations fulfilled a vital function in difficult times.
