About the Seminar
The Arctic is warming nearly 4 times faster than the global average, and this has already reduced the Arctic sea ice volume by 75% over the last 40 years. The Arctic Ocean is expected to experience ice-free summers as early as the 2030s. This will further exacerbate the climate crisis, since the Arctic sea ice functions as part of the Earth’s refrigerator by reflecting some of the sun’s energy back into space. Losing the Arctic sea ice permanently would have a warming effect equivalent to 1000 Gt of CO2. Restoring and preserving the sea ice through ice thickening methods is a potentially effective intervention to actively cool the Earth.
