On Monday 10th February 2025 we will be welcoming Professor Paul McLoughlin, University College Dublin, to the Vascular Science Seminar Series.
Details as follows:
Date: Monday 10th March 2025
Time: 1pm – 2pm UK time
Talk title: Shear stress and the regulation of endothelial permeability in the pulmonary microcirculation
Location: Room 427/428, 4th Floor ICTEM Building Hammersmith Campus and online (MS Teams)
Short Bio:
Professor Paul McLoughlin is Chair of Physiology and Head of the Biomedical Sciences Section in the School of Medicine University College Dublin. He is also a Senior Fellow in the UCD Conway Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Research and Chair of Publications and a Trustee of the Physiological Society.
Talk Description:
The maintenance of normal endothelial barrier function in the pulmonary microcirculation is essential for lung homeostasis. This is most starkly illustrated in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a leading cause of death and disability in intensive care, in which abnormally increased endothelial permeability leads to alveolar oedema and life-threatening failure of gas exchange. Investigations of the pathophysiological mechanisms of this endothelial leak have predominantly focussed on inflammatory mediators. More recently, we have shown that normal shear stress, the tangential, frictional force exerted by blood flow on the luminal surface of the endothelium, is required for endothelial homeostasis and prevention of alveolar oedema in the in situ pulmonary microcirculation. Furthermore, normal shear stress promotes restoration of barrier function following injury suggesting that investigation of the underlying mechanisms may lead to novel therapeutic strategies.
A Vascular Science Seminar series site on MS Teams has been created for you to sign up to and join to be able to attend the seminar if you are joining online. To do so please click this link which will request access to the Team site and Seminar if you are not already a member.
Please do this ahead of the seminar talk.
