We are delighted to welcome Professor Robert H. Bartlett as our Guest Speaker today for the Paul Wood Annual Lecture. Robert H. Bartlett, MD FACS is Emeritus Professor of Surgery, Sections of General and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan. Prior to becoming Professor Emeritus, Prof. Bartlett was Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and Director of the Extracorporeal Life Support Program at the University of Michigan Medical Centre. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, cum laude in 1963.
Prof. Bartlett’s professional life has been characterized by exceptional vision, creativity, persistence, and energy. He developed extracorporeal life support (ECLS, ECMO) from the laboratory, through the first successful clinical trials, to routine practice worldwide. ECLS has led to new understanding of the pathophysiology of renal, cardiac, and pulmonary failure and provides the basis for much of advanced critical care. His research in applied physiology and artificial organs has been continuously supported by NIH since 1971, resulting in clinical programs of ECLS, continuous renal replacement therapy, liver support, and management of respiratory failure. The University of Michigan Extracorporeal Life Support Laboratory is pursuing projects studying blood clotting in extracorporeal circulation, implantable lung devices, organ banking, artificial placenta for extreme prematurity, and techniques for extracorporeal circulation.
Prof. Bartlett’s contribution to surgery have been recognized by numerous awards, including: the Medallion for Scientific Achievement from the American Surgical Association, the Jacobson Award for Innovation from the American College of Surgeons; the Robert E Gross Lecture of the American Pediatric Surgical Association; the Pioneer in Neonatology Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics; Medal of Recognition from the National Academy of Surgery of France; the McGraw Medal of the Detroit Surgical Association; The Baaken award and the Lillehei lecture of the Society of Thoracic Surgery and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has served as President of the American Society for Artificial Organs and the International Federation of Artificial Organs; is the founder of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO); and was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science.
Prior to the Paul Wood Lecture, there will also be a symposium running throughout the afternoon:
