Support our students in memory of Professor Abdus Salam

Join us in honouring Professor Abdus Salam

Professor Abdus Salam (1926-1996) joined the Theoretical Physics group at Imperial College London in 1957 after persuasion from the Head of Physics, Lord Patrick Blackett, and remained until his death in 1996. A Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Professor Salam co-authored works on topics including spontaneous symmetry breaking, unitary symmetries and electroweak unification (winning the 1979 Nobel Prize for the latter).

Professor Abdus Salam

He was popular among his students, who, as well as being impressed by his vitality and the imagination with which he approached his subject, were eager to impress him in turn and often sought to avoid him in the Department corridors until they were able to share work of a satisfactory nature.

Professor Salam also devoted his life to the goal of international peace and cooperation, especially to reducing the gap between the developed and developing nations. He sought to support developing countries in establishing their own scientific and technological destinies, as he believed that beyond providing financial aid, furthering education and academic autonomy was the true key to unlocking the potential of these regions.
