Robust and accurate open boundary conditions for incompressible turbulent jets and plumes
, Computers and FluidsWe show that a popular convective open boundary condition (OBC) is unsuitable in the direct simulation of incompressible turbulent jets and plumes, because (1) the boundary condition modifies their spreading rate; (2) the results are domain dependent; and (3) the boundary condition is liable to cause instability and therefore requires domains that are much larger than the area of interest. We demonstrate the accuracy of new axisymmetric OBCs compared to the standard OBC by conducting direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a turbulent plume and a turbulent jet. The new OBCs conform to the fundamental features of statistically axisymmetric turbulent flows, regardless of the computational domains on which they are imposed. They do not contain tunable parameters and are dynamical, accounting for the strength and extent of a flow at a given time, which eliminates the need for calibration to particular cases. The implementation presented herein is computationally efficient and robust in the vicinity of turbulent flows

A variational formulation of vertical slice models
, Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, Vol: 469, ISSN: 1364-5021A variational framework is defined for vertical slice models with three-dimensional velocity depending only on x and z. The models that result from this framework are Hamiltonian, and have a Kelvin–Noether circulation theorem that results in a conserved potential vorticity in the slice geometry. These results are demonstrated for the incompressible Euler–Boussinesq equations with a constant temperature gradient in the y-direction (the Eady–Boussinesq model), which is an idealized problem used to study the formation and subsequent evolution of weather fronts. We then introduce a new compressible extension of this model. Unlike the incompressible model, the compressible model does not produce solutions that are also solutions of the three-dimensional equations, but it does reduce to the Eady–Boussinesq model in the low Mach number limit. Hence, the new model could be used in asymptotic limit error testing for compressible weather models running in a vertical slice configuration.

Eliciting and combining decision criteria using a limited palette of utility functions and uncertainty distributions: illustrated by application to Pest Risk Analysis
, Risk Analysis, Vol: 34, Pages: 4-16, ISSN: 0272-4332Utility functions in the form of tables or matrices have often been used to combine discretely-rated decision-making criteria. Matrix elements are usually specified individually, so no one rule or principle can be easily stated for the utility function as a whole. A series of five matrices are presented which aggregate criteria two at a time using simple rules which express a varying degree of constraint of the lower rating over the higher. A further nine possible matrices were obtained by using a different rule either side of the main axis of the matrix to describe situations where the criteria have a differential influence on the outcome. Uncertainties in the criteria are represented by three alternative frequency distributions from which the assessors select the most appropriate. The output of the utility function is a distribution of rating frequencies that is dependent on the distributions of the input criteria. In Pest Risk Analysis (PRA), seven of these utility functions were required to mimic the logic by which assessors for the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) arrive at an overall rating of pest risk. The framework enables the development of PRAs which are consistent and easy to understand, criticise, compare and change. When tested in workshops, PRA practitioners thought that the approach accorded with both the logic and the level of resolution which they used in the risk assessments

Solubility of carbon dioxide in aqueous blends of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol and piperazine
, Chemical Engineering Science, Vol: 101, Pages: 851-864, ISSN: 0009-2509In this work, we report new solubility data for carbon dioxide in aqueous blends of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) and piperazine (PZ). A static-analytical apparatus, validated in previous work, was employed to obtain the results at temperatures of (313.2, 333.2, 373.2, 393.2) K, and at total pressures up to 460 kPa. Two different solvent blends were studied, both having a total amine mass fraction of 30%: (25 mass% AMP+5 mass% PZ) and (20 mass% AMP+10 mass% PZ). Comparisons between these PZ activated aqueous AMP systems and 30 mass% aqueous AMP have been made in terms of their cyclic capacities under typical scrubbing conditions of 313 K in the absorber and 393 K in the stripper. The Kent–Eisenberg model was used to correlate the experimental data.
