AB - Calcium looping (CaL) is a technology that uses a recyclable solid. However, all solid sorbents eventually require either regeneration or replacement, as they are degraded by physical or chemical processes. Implicit in the CaL approach is that the primary sorbent (limestone) is less expensive than the carefully manufactured sorbents associated with chemical looping, for instance. This means that larger amounts of spent sorbents are likely to be produced and will require treatment. This chapter looks at the various possibilities of using spent sorbents produced by CaL processes, focusing particularly on the power industry, steel and cement production.
