We’ve had another fantastic year in I-Explore humanities and social sciences, thanks to our dedicated teaching staff, colleagues and students. With Horizons now firmly embedded within I-Explore, and I-Explore within every Imperial undergraduate degree, we’re really enjoying meeting students from many specialisms, and understanding how they engage with our subjects. Plus, constantly learning what works well and what we can further improve.

Many thanks to all the students who’ve contributed feedback and suggestions to enhancing and expanding our offering further – your time and ideas are much appreciated. This coming year, based on consistent demand for hands-on, creative courses, we will be expanding our arts offering, with extra classes on practical art as well as the potential for more creative projects through our humanities projects option. And hopefully more to follow!

Teaching delivery

We were delighted to see that student MEQ feedback for our teaching delivery was the best so far, with over 80% of respondents classifying their experiences of teaching as either agreeing or definitely agreeing that their modules were both i) well-structured and ii) interesting and stimulating. In fact, within this, the large majority of respondents definitely agreed with these statements.

Assessment and feedback

Looking at the MEQ there was strong enthusiasm for HSS’ assessment and feedback methods, also with over 80% of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing that the assessments allowed students to show what they’ve learnt on the module and that feedback was helpful to support development and improvement. We’re very pleased to hear.

Access and support

A small fraction of students reported through MEQ that they found it challenging to access relevant learning resources. We will work hard to ensure future students can access their module materials.

Further feedback insights

We also engage with students in other formats such as the student-staff committee, which met several times this past academic year. As always, we love to hear about new course ideas from students – which has already been a successful channel for running new courses such as psychology and art.

A newer method of gathering student feedback has been a Mentimeter poll part-way through the module, a method successfully deployed in other I-Explore streams. Such polls are informal and really help to gather insight into, for example, the pace of delivery, work quantity and what students would love more of. We’re very grateful for all students who’ve responded to those. We look forward to developing this feedback method in the future.
