For the finest teas, the new bud and the first two new leaves are picked. It can take up to 20,000 buds and two leaves to make just 1kg of tea!

Pickers carry the fruit of their labours in baskets hung from their heads or on their backs. Machines can do the job but they may take old leaves and stalks resulting in low quality tea.
