Two types of rolling: In Orthodox rolling leaves are rolled between rollers until gently broken. In the other type, CTC (Cut, Tear, Curl) a machine cuts and tears the leaves into smaller pieces.

Why rolling is done: As you can see in the animation, during rolling enzymes are released and this helps the oxidation step take place (see next section). This part is essential because it allows flavour inside the leaves to be released and to be developed in later steps of the production chain.
