Journal articleLivingston AG, 2005,
Microbial strain stability in bioremediation
, Industrial Bioprocessing, Vol: 27, ISSN: 1056-7194Researchers at Imperial College of London investigated the stability of single strains used for the degradation of recalcitrant substrates. Experiments were carried out in two bioreactors. One was inoculated with Xanthobacter aut GJ10 to degrade 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE), and the other was inoculated with Burkholderia sp.JS150 degrading monochlorobenzene. Universal and strain specific 16S rRNA oligonucleotide probes made it possible to monitor strain stability. Results in the two bioreactors were radically different due to the specific pathway needed to degrade DCE.
