Mahima Bataju - MRes Clinical Research (Diabetes and Obesity)
What attracted me to the MRes in Clinical Research was its unique combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, offering a comprehensive approach to understanding and conducting research in the field of clinical medicine. As someone passionate about making tangible impact in healthcare, I was particularly drawn to the program’s emphasis on allowing students to choose research projects aligned with their interest. This flexibility, coupled with the commitment to equipping students with the necessary tools and expertise to conduct rigorous and meaningful research in clinical settings, appealed to me greatly. Moreover, the opportunity to collaborate closely with experienced researchers and clinicians, as well as engage in hands-on research projects, promised invaluable learning experiences that would prepare me for a successful career in clinical research. I was excited by the prospect of immersing myself in real-world research scenarios, where I could apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges under the guidance of experts in the field. Overall, the MRes in Clinical Research offered the prefect balance of academic rigor, practical training, and real-world application that aligned perfectly with my career aspirations goals. It was clear that this programme would not only enhance my skills and knowledge but also empower me to make meaningful contributions to advancing healthcare practices and improving patient outcomes.
For my project, I focused on overseeing the recruitment and enrollment of participants for human clinical trial. This involved diligent communication and coordination with participants, research doctors, administrative staff, and research nurses to ensure the smooth operation and successful completion of the trial. Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of managing a clinical trial and honed my skills in effective communication, teamwork, and project coordination.
The most beneficial aspect of the programme was the well-structured modules, strategically allocated throughout the timeline. Each module provided focused learning on specific aspects of clinical research, allowing us to delve deeply into each topic at the appropriate time. Moreover, the unwavering support and guidance from Dr Aaron and Fiona were invaluable. Their expertise and willingness to assist whenever needed greatly enhanced our learning experience and ensured we had the resources necessary to succeed in the programme.
Since completing the MRes program, I have been actively engaged in pursuing my GMC registration process. Additionally, with my MRes degree, I have embarked on a journey of professional growth by applying for various positions in the field. This has led to multiple job interviews, during which I have had the opportunity to showcase my skills and expertise gained from the program. Importantly, I have been offered the opportunity to pursue a PhD, which I have planned to pursue after completing the registration process.
For those considering the MRes in clinical Research, my advice would be to seize the opportunity with enthusiasm and dedication. This program offers a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, providing invaluable insights into complexities of clinical research. My recommendation would be to actively engage with the coursework, immerse yourself in research projects, and take advantage of the guidance and support offered by faculty members. What I enjoyed most about studying at Imperial College London and in the Faculty of Medicine was the vibrant academic atmosphere, where I had the privilege of learning from leading experts in their fields. One aspect that stood out to me was the accessibility and approachability of faculty members. Despite their esteemed reputations, professors and researchers were always open to questions, discussions, and collaboration. This created a supportive learning environment where students felt empowered to explore complex topics and pursue innovative ideas. I particularly appreciated the mentorship of Dr David Owen and Dr Aaron Lett and guidance I received from faculty members, who played a pivotal role in shaping my academic journey and nurturing my passion for research. Overall, Imperial college felt like a home away from home.
