Environmental Research Hackathon

On February 19th, 2025, Imperial College London's Hammersmith campus hosted the inaugural Environmental Health Hackathon, a dynamic event that empowered 21 A-level Computer Science students from London and Reading. Funded by an MRC Centre for Environment and Health PCIEP seed grant, and organized by Dr. Beatriz Galindo-Prieto, the hackathon demystified the application of AI and computer science in addressing critical environmental health challenges.

Students engaged in hands-on problem-solving, tackling real-world scenarios such as developing machine learning models for pneumonia prediction and analysing the correlation between air pollution and disease prevalence. This collaborative environment fostered teamwork, sharpened coding skills, and ignited a passion for the intersection of technology and public health. The day culminated in well-deserved awards for outstanding student performance and enthusiastic feedback from participating students, dedicated volunteers, and expert speakers, highlighting the event's success in inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Inaugural Lecture from Dr Ian Mudway
