Neonatal Update 2023

Neonatal Update is an established annual event produced by Imperial College London. It has origins in a meeting established over 40 years ago and is renowned for its innovative programme incorporating contributions from a wide range of world-leading scientists and clinical researchers. The aim is to introduce delegates to areas of science not necessarily met in their day-to-day activities, to widen horizons and to foster new collaborations.

Dr Sabita Uthaya and Dr Vimal Vasu have worked alongside Professor Neena Modi for many years and are now delighted to lead the academic programme for the NU 2023 meeting and are currently working on what looks set to be a superb programme of diverse talks. 

The faculty includes Professors of Neonatology from the Universities of Bristol, Sussex and Nottingham; and from Guy’s & St Thomas’s and Great Ormond Street Hospitals in the UK, alongside Professors from The University of Toronto in Canada and the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in the USA.   The programme will be announced here as soon as it is published. 

Dr Sabita Uthaya who has taken over as Director of the Neonatal Update is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Neonatal Medicine at Imperial College London and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. Vimal Vasu who is Co-director of the Neonatal Update is a consultant neonatologist who currently works at the regional neonatal unit at the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent They have both been involved with the organisation and delivery of the Neonatal Update for over 20 years.

Dr Vimal Vasu is a consultant neonatologist who currently works at the regional neonatal unit at the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent. He completed his MD (Res) degree at Imperial College in 2011 and a Masters in Healthcare Law and Ethics (University of Dundee). He continues to be actively involved in clinical research with interests in telomere biology, communication and nutrition. He holds an honorary senior lectureship post at the School of Biosciences, University of Kent. He is also actively involved in global child health through work with an NGO in Haiti.

Neonatal Update 2023 is aimed at: 

• Neonatal and paediatric clinicians and researchers
• Neonatal and paediatric trainees
• Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
• Neonatal nurses

The 2023 meeting will be a 4-day, fully in-person event to allow the best possible opportunity for knowledge sharing, discussion, and networking with the global neonatology peer group in the same space.  

It will not be  streamed live to a virtual audience during the week of the event. However, all presentations will be recorded to enable those unable to be in London access the content at a time of their own convenience. These recorded lectures are available to purchase now and will be ready to view online shortly after the meeting has taken place (approx mid-Dec 2023).

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has approved this activity for CPD in accordance with the current RCPCH CPD guidelines.

Young Investigator Award

The Neonatal Update programme will once again offer two Young Investigator Awards, providing an opportunity for neonatal scientists transitioning or newly transitioned to independent research careers to present their work and discuss their programmes with a senior, international audience.

Abstract submission will open on 15 May and close 31 July 2023. Abstracts should be submitted to neonatal.update@imperial.ac.uk or visit the Young Investigator Award page from more information.
