Smoking cessation in lung cancer patients

Smoking status in structured data is often inaccurately recorded or missing in the electronic health record, with clinicians often recording this in free-text forms (e.g. cigarettes per day, previous smoker, non-smoker, etc.). We analysed the unstructured smoking status data using Natural Language Processing, which enabled smoking status data capture to 92% of patient records. A dynamic list was also included within the electronic health record showing all patients with known smoking status on a ward at a single time with ability to trigger smoking status update and referral form for smoking cessation programmes.
