Since 2003, together with the School of Medicine Students' Union, Imperial College School of Medicine has held an annual awards programme recognising staff excellence in delivering the School's undergraduate programmes.

The School was delighted to re-launch these awards and to welcome back our colleagues and students to campus to celebrate the achievements of our community in person.

Evolving throughout their 20 years and previously known as the Teaching Excellence Awards, the ICSM Education Awards were retitled for 2023 to best celebrate and recognise the variety of contributions made to the success of our programme delivery across both our Medicine and Medical Biosciences programmes, including through teaching, tutoring and student support.

The next ceremony will take place in June 2025 at our Charing Cross campus, as part of an expanded event to bring the ICSM community together for discussion and celebration. This year's winners will be announced on this page when the nomination and review process is complete.

The awards nomination form is open year-round and we are currently accepting nominations for the 2025 cycle. The deadline for this cycle's nominations is 12.00 (noon), Thursday 24 April. Please ensure you've submitted your nominations by then, and we look forward to reading them!

Nomination information & eligibility criteria

Nominations are welcomed via the new online nomination form. Please note that all nominations must include student citations, even if the nominator is a student, to evidence student support. Nominations can be made in the following categories:

Award	Eligibility
Teaching Excellence	All teaching staff – all NHS-salaried, including nurses, HCAs etc., and all MBBS and BMB College staff Please note that teaching fellows should only be nominated in the Teaching Fellow Excellence category Nominations are welcomed for any staff at Imperial's partner Trust teaching hospitals, district general hospitals, mental health trusts, primary care trusts or practices, and staff actively teaching in any year of either undergraduate programme. Confirmation of employment of potential winners will be sought from site lead e.g. DCS, or relevant Phase Director or Head of Year
Teaching Fellow Excellence	Any teaching fellow – includes both MBBS and BMB, and clinical/science teaching, therefore open to both College teaching staff and NHS-salaried staff Confirmation of employment of potential winners will be sought from relevant FEO Programme team
Supporting the Student Experience	Any staff member providing support to undergraduate students in any capacity, including FEO staff and Trust-based Teaching Coordinators Confirmation of employment of potential winners will be sought from appropriate leadership, e.g. FEO Section Head or Trust DCS
Excellence in Tutoring	Any type of tutor from any year, any programme Confirmation of employment will be sought from FEO Tutoring team
Distinguished Teacher Award	Must have won a Teaching Excellence Award previously No other confirmations required, further information may be sought to confirm range of roles/activity
Head of School Award	Awarded at the discretion of the Head of Imperial College School of Medicine Nominations not received for this category
Peer Award	This award is new for our 2025 cycle. Staff may nominate other staff for this category without the need for providing additional student support (they can do so if they wish, but must justify why the nominee could not be nominated for a category requiring student support). This category has been introduced to recognise the huge range of contributions to undergraduate education from many staff not in directly student-facing roles. Staff are encouraged to highlight the above and beyond efforts of colleagues in their roles in the support of undergraduate education from any team. Selecting this category on the form will show nominators a separate additional citation box in which they can upload supporting citations from fellow staff.

Nominators will need to provide their own contact details and details for the nominee. They will also need to provide the following two citations:

Part A: Citation from the nominator
Detail of at least one example of the nominee's significant contribution to the support or delivery of undergraduate education in the School of Medicine.
Please note: Nominations made by students must also include additional student citations in Part B.

Criteria to assess the application will include:

Continuing commitment to the provision of high-quality teaching or support
Demonstration of exceptional practise or innovation
Activity or effort 'above and beyond' expectations

Part B: Student Support
Include the name, year group and email address of the student
Citations from students in support of the nomination. We ask ideally for a minimum of two student citations.

Citations are advised not to exceed 250 words, especially when submitting more than the minimum requirement of two.

Nominees who have won an award in the previous three years will normally not be considered.

Staff nominating in the Peer Award category will be shown a separate Peer Citation box in which to add support from other staff to their nomination, and not the Part B outlined above.
